⚠️ FULL SPOILER REVIEW ⚠️
(if you haven't listened yet — scroll away, protect yourself, and READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS first)
listen. LISTEN.
this was my first ever pitch-black dark erotic horror. and at the time? i did not know the difference between "dark romance" and "erotic horror." reader.
i found out.
i saw Joe Arden and Corvin King on the cover and went "sure, whatever, I'll listen to anything those two do. How bad can it be?"
it was bad.
it was SO bad. in the best, worst, most unhinged way a book has ever ruined me. and i mean that as the highest possible compliment.
THE SETUP 🎨 Byron is a serial killer who hunts down-on-their-luck girls and turns them into "living" art — an actual studio (picture Dexter's kill room, but permanent, with a drain in the center) where he uses their blood to paint on their bodies. on the surface? charming lawyer. rich, handsome, does pro bono work, targets a poor neighborhood where any struggling girl would think she'd struck gold meeting him.
the whole town LOVES him.
then he meets the sister. perfect. everything he wants in a canvas. and then he meets Ren.
her brother. and it is OBSESSION at first sight. Ren's got his own darkness — fresh out of jail for… crimes… justified crimes, but still — living in a trailer with his sister while he tries to get back on his feet. so what does Byron do?
he DATES THE SISTER. to get closer to REN. 😭
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE 🕳️
and then he plays with him. tests him. teases him. leaves the bedroom door open so Ren can see and hear them. it's grotesque and it's calculated and Luna writes every second of it with this suffocating precision. then a girl from the diner goes missing — and Ren INSTANTLY clocks Byron.
he's the only one who sees through the mask.
(and Byron? Byron LOVES that. calls the sister his Rose and Ren his Thorn.)
Ren follows him. finds the studio. TRIES to save the girl — tries, God, he tried :( — and gets caught. taken. drugged. and put through things i genuinely cannot describe on this app without getting my account deleted.
THE PART THAT BROKE ME 💔
Byron uses the sister as leverage — "behave, let me work in peace, and she stays safe." so Ren agrees. but that is NOT consent, and Luna never lets you forget it.
there's a branding/marking scene — Byron claiming ownership of Ren's body — that was horrifying. and heartbreaking. and then Luna somehow, SOMEHOW, wrote it in a way that had me spiraling so hard my therapist would take her glasses off and quietly write me a script for something STRONG.
THAT is the talent.
that's the tightrope.
she makes you feel horror and grief and want in the same breath and hate yourself a little for it. i felt for both of them. i screamed at both of them. i wanted to call the cops on both of them.
THE ENDING (yes, spoilers, I warned you) 🚗 the sister connects Byron to the disappearances and gets the police involved. Ren survives by "behaving," waits for his opening, and ESCAPES. there's an arrest. a trial. and months later — after therapy, after healing, after Ren finally starts coming to terms with his trauma and his sexuality — he climbs into an Uber…
and the driver is Byron. gas leak.
Ren passes out.
and we END on a monologue that promises the Artist and the Thorn are nowhere near done.
I SCREAMED. i needed Volume II immediately. i have never been so upset and so satisfied at the exact same time.
THE VERDICT 🖤 the writing is immersive. the emotions are real and earned. the narration is exceptional — Joe Arden's charm-over-rot, Corvin King turning Ren inside out, Mia Moreno quietly devastating. i fell in LOVE with Luna K. Wicked as a writer. this is a woman in complete control of the darkest possible material, and she wields it like a scalpel.
this was my FIRST 6-STAR READ OF 2026. ⭐ i don't hand those out. Luna earned it and then some.
